Mr. Whittington is also the Principal and President of Whittington Consulting LLC and has provided clients with financial analysis, long range planning, strategic planning, professional coaching and bond covenant analysis. For bank clients, he has provided independent analysis of financial strengths for future adherence to bond covenants.

He was also the Vice President for Business and Finance at Agnes Scott College and has served in the administration at the University of Virginia, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His career in higher education has spanned more than 52 years.

He has an undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from Duke University. Mr. Whittington is an in demand national speaker and consultant on the topics of higher education finance, institutional planning, strategic planning, bond financing and construction. Additionally, he is a member of NACUBO and SACUBO and is a finance and administration evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In this work he served as the primary financial evaluator of institutional health and long-term viability.

He is the recipient of the Distinguished Business Officer Award, the highest national award from the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), in 2018.

Further, he is featured as a leading architect of institutional change and improvement in George Keller’s bestselling book, Transforming a College: The Story of a Little-Known College’s Strategic Climb to National Distinction (2004), which is read by faculty, administration and trustees all over the globe as a blueprint for institutional change.

In March 2025, he received the Elon Medallion, the highest honor given for meritorious service to Elon University. Additionally, Elon University named a building in his honor, Whittington Hall.
