On August 25, 2023 at 1pm EST, The American Historical Association is hosting a free online event discussing Florida’s new state standards for K–12 history/social studies education.
This hour-long discussion brings together four leading scholars of African American history. The new standards delay any mention of slavery in curriculum until the fifth grade, as well as indicate that students can learn about historical and ongoing racial discrimination without confronting the concept of racism until high school (where it comes up only once in 14 pages of standards). What is the relationship of the new standards to broader narratives of US history?
This online event is free and open to the public.
