Brevard, NC, August 7, 2025 –
At the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Higher Education (Gardner Institute), we believe leadership is rooted in purpose, innovation, and a commitment to transforming institutions and systems so every student can thrive. This is our Transformation Vision. As we grow, we’re excited to welcome new team members whose expertise and passion will help advance this vision.
We’re thrilled to announce that Elkie Burnside has joined the Gardner Institute as an Instructional Designer, effective August 1, 2025.
Dr. Burnside’s two decades of excellence in instructional design, curriculum development, and accessible eLearning development will be instrumental to the Gardner Institute’s Transformation Vision. Elkie’s expertise in creating scalable, inclusive learning experiences aligns perfectly with our mission. I am confident Elkie will play a pivotal role in advancing institutional transformation that helps all students to thrive.” –Andrew (Drew) Koch, PhD, Gardner Institute CEO.
Through previous roles, Elkie has led the development of over 800 digital learning assets, ranging from asynchronous courses and simulations to job aids and accessibility-compliant templates. Their experience will be invaluable as we expand our work through the Transformation Process.
Their background in designing and redesigning instructional programs – grounded in accessibility, evaluation, and making sure all learners thrive – positions them to help us reimagine engagement models and strengthen the impact of our work.
“I am immensely pleased to be joining the Gardner Institute to help contribute to the work of transformation in this role. Bringing heart and humanity through all aspects of higher education is extremely important to me, and I believe being part of this team will help continue to advance this goal.” – Elkie Burnside
As we expand our reach and deepen our mission, we’re committed to growing a team that leads with purpose—because that’s how real, lasting change happens.
Stay tuned as we continue to spotlight the people who power our purpose.
